Built specifically for Metra by the Japanese rail car builder Nippon Sharyo, the TYPE 8500 Cab Car and TYPE 6000 Trailers were designed with additional safety features, comfort, and accessibility in mind to help modernize Metra’s aging commuter car fleet. Metra took delivery of the TYPE 8500 and 6000 from 2002 to 2008. Metra has 200 of each the TYPE 8500 and TYPE 6000 in its fleet. Cal Train and Virgina Railway Express also ordered variations of the TYPE 8500 and 6000 after seeing its success with Metra. These modern Bi-Levels are a staple of Chicago railroading and will continue to haul commuters to their destinations around Chicago for years to come.
